Taking the Catwalk to the Street
Let’s face it: no matter how much we coo and fuss over the brilliant designs that saunter down the runway at London fashion week, most of us wouldn’t be caught dead out and about in the exact same outfits the models wear. When styled for the catwalk designer pieces look more like artwork than anything you would trot down to the supermarket in and this might have put you off taking the plunge and becoming a designer clothing maven. However, if you know how to wear these designer looks even the wackiest piece of fashion can look stylish on the street.
Runway designs are an extreme interpretation of the designer’s ‘vision’, so they are, in a way, meant to look ridiculous. Most pieces you seen on the catwalk are never meant to be worn by every day people and are made in limited qualities. What you should end up wearing is a vastly toned down version of the runway piece – these ready to wear garments allow you to dress stylishly without having to radically change your style in order to enjoy designer clothes.
This is the general rule of thumb to follow – if you’re going to wear something flamboyant or haute couture you are best to pair it with something very toned down. For example, the latest designer blouse might look a little too high fashion for the street if you match it up with harem pants and Alexander McQueen armadillo shoes! If you love to wear designer dresses, pairing one with a cute boyfriend blazer and some complimentary jewellery can ensure your outfit looks stylish rather than silly.
